A Brief Guide
The Stations & Their Stories
Each Lodge officer holds a station with its own jewel, posture, and ancient lesson. Together the line is a lived diagram of the Lodge.
East
Worshipful Master
Presides over the Lodge from the East, like the rising sun, to "open his Lodge, set the Craft to work, and give them proper instruction." His jewel is the Square. The honorific "Worshipful" is Old English for "worthy of respect" — it is a title of office, not religious worship.
West
Senior Warden
Sits in the West and assists the Master, presiding in his absence. His jewel is the Level — the symbol of equality. Like the setting sun, he marks the close of the day's labor and "pays the Craft their wages, that none may go away dissatisfied."
South
Junior Warden
Sits in the South, where the sun stands at meridian. His jewel is the Plumb. He calls the Craft from labor to refreshment and from refreshment to labor and oversees the conduct of the Brethren during refreshment.
Right of Master
Treasurer
Receives all moneys from the Secretary, keeps a true and accurate account, and pays them out by order of the Worshipful Master and consent of the Brethren. His jewel is two crossed keys.
Left of Master
Secretary
The hand and the memory of the Lodge. He records the proceedings, conducts the correspondence, collects all moneys, and pays them to the Treasurer. His jewel is two crossed quills.
Near the Master
Chaplain
Offers prayers at opening and closing, and at the altar during ritual work. The Chaplain need not be a clergyman by profession — only a Brother of dignity and devotion. His jewel is the open Volume of the Sacred Law.
Right of Master
Senior Deacon
Carries orders from the Master to the Senior Warden; receives and conducts visitors and candidates; bears the Rod. His jewel is the Square and Compasses with the Sun.
Right of Sr. Warden
Junior Deacon
Carries orders from the Senior Warden to the Junior Warden; attends the door of the Lodge; ensures the Tiler is at his post. His jewel is the Square and Compasses with the Moon.
Stewards
Senior & Junior Stewards
Assist the Deacons; prepare candidates; serve at the festive board. Their jewel is the cornucopia — the horn of plenty — for "the Lodge is a place of refreshment as well as labor."
Variable
Marshal
Forms processions; conducts dignitaries; arranges public ceremonies including cornerstone layings and Masonic funerals. His jewel is two crossed batons.
Outside the Door
Tiler
Guards the door of the Lodge with a drawn sword. The sentinel of the Brethren, he ensures that none but Masons of the proper degree are admitted, and that the Lodge is safe from "cowans and eavesdroppers." His jewel is the sword.
